A Three Year Old's Compassion

This is a story of a three year old who showed Christ's compassion and love....



Brayden had just received a gift from his sweet grandparents, but unfortunately he was not a big fan of the gift...a Raggedy Andy doll.  I suppose that Andy might look a bit scary to a child with his big wide eyes, triangle nose, and red hair.  After all, he does look DIFFERENT from what normal dolls typically look like. After several prompts from me, Brayden finally said "Thank you," quietly to his grandparents, but did not touch the doll for the rest of the trip.
A doll all alone and in need of some love. 

One morning after the trip,  I had set Raggedy Andy on the rocker, and Brayden saw him.

 "Mommy," he said,  "I don't want him, he looks so different."

So began a discussion.  I said, "Awww....poor Andy.  How does he look different to you?"  

Brayden pointed to Andy's nose and eyes and talked about how they looked different.  

'Brayden,' I said gently, 'Remember one of your favorite books, "The Love Monster,"  where no one wanted to love the monster because he looked scary and different, but then a Mama found him and loved him anyway?  He wanted a home too, but no one would love him at first.'  

We then proceeded to talk about his favorite "Jay Jay" plane book where it talks about how God loves those who are different. The story showed different looking planes.  

I looked into Brayden's eyes and said, "I think Grandmommie and Granddaddy wanted Raggedy Andy to have a home where he would be loved even though he looks different, and they chose you because they knew you would love him."  

The result: I have never seen a more compassionate three year old.  He took Andy into his arms and started hugging him and giving him kisses.  He spent the morning sharing his cereal with Andy, giving Andy a drink from his cup, and took Andy for a piggy back ride on his shoulder.  He cuddled with Andy while watching TV,  took Andy with him to Walmart, and even put chap stick on his doll.  That night he hugged up to Andy and went to sleep with him safely in his arms.  He is now in love with his doll because he took compassion on him and decided that Andy needed love to.

I wonder what would happen if we would love people the same way?  If we would not turn away from them because they were different, but if we saw them through the eyes of Christ....through the eyes of his unconditional love and acceptance. Maybe we should learn a lesson from this three year old child and show people compassion no matter how different they are from us.  We all may be different, but our hearts are all the same...broken and in need of a Savior.  Instead of looking down on others, lets take the time to show them Christ's love and point them to our need for Him.  

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:11

Something for Singles!

Verse of the Week:

Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalms 27:14

Something for Singles

Samson finished hanging up the phone.  He has just asked the girl of his dreams out.  After starring at the phone for a whole hour, he finally got the nerve to call her. He asked her out for a dinner and movie Friday night.  She said that she wasn't available that night, but maybe another time. Samson decided to call again next week and see if she wanted to go to the Church picnic with him.  However, when he called, she didn't answer the phone; instead, it went to her voice mail.  Samson left a message and asked her to call him back when she got a chance. One day went by, and no phone call.  "She is probably just busy and hasn't had a chance to return my call," Samson concluded.  Two days went by, then three.  "Maybe she forgot." Samson thought.  After a week of no calls, Samson analyzed the situation, "She might not be interested in me, or maybe she is just shy.  Perhaps I should call and make sure she isn't really interested."  So, he called again.  This time she answered and gave him a resounding NO!  Poor Samson.



Lisa came home from her college English class, frustrated.  She had seen the guy of her dreams in class that day.  He seemed interested in her, but yet after several weeks, he still hadn't asked her out.  She had made sure she talked to him every time they had class together, tried to sit by him during the lecture, and made effort to be available in the hallway for him to talk too after class.  Still, he hadn't asked her out.  "Surely he is interested in me," she analyzed, "After all, he smiles at me every time I see him; he teases me; and I have even caught him starring at me across the room.  I know he teases other girls, but he teases me differently.  He must be shy; that is why he doesn't ask me out.  Maybe he just doesn't know how to approach me yet.  Maybe he is scared because he knows I am the one, and doesn't know how to respond!"  Lisa continued to analyze the situation for the rest of the day.

Emily just went through a horrible breakup.  After 2 years of dating, she hadn't seen it coming until she found out from him last week that he was having an affair.  "What is wrong with me?" she asked, "Why did he leave me for another woman?"

Any of these situations sound familiar?  Lets face it, life as a single person is HARD.  The task of trying to find "the one" seems overwhelming, and the frustrations of going from relationship to relationship leaves a person hopeless and hurt.  Guys seem to be rejected more than they are accepted when they ask girls out, and girls seem to be beside themselves hoping a certain guy will take notice of her.  "What is wrong with me?" many singles ask, "Why can't I find the one?"  The process of WAITING seems torturous, and the older a person gets the more they question if they are destined to get married at all.

I was single for several years until I got married when I was 26.  While it was a difficult time in my life, it was also an amazing time as well.  I want to share some things I learned as a single person to encourage other singles out there...

1.  WAIT ON THE LORD
"Wait?  Did you say wait?"  I know what you are thinking,  "I have already waited 4 plus years and you are telling me to wait more!  Thanks for the advice, Katrina!"  Waiting on the Lord has to be the hardest thing to do.  Ever notice that God seems to work slowwwwwwlllly most of the time.  It drives me nuts.  In our fast pace society where we want everything immediately, waiting seems to be foreign to most of us.  Seriously, though, wait on the Lord.  He has your best interests in mind.  Don't try to take things in your hands to speed up the process.  Whenever we try to do things our way, it usually ends up in a disaster.  I have a sweet friend, who was single for a long time after going through a hard divorce.  She was lonely, and wanted to have someone in her life.  Not able to wait, she ended up marrying a man that she wasn't sure about, but because she was desperate for companionship, she jumped into it.  Many of the issues she was initially unsure about became big issues, and she is now in a very tough relationship.  She once admitted to me, "Katrina, I wish I had waited on God and not taken things into my own hands." She is still married and trying to make the best of the situation, but my heart breaks for her.

Unknown to most people, I had the opportunity to get married before I met Brian; the guy had planned to propose to me that summer.  However, I had many uncertainties about the relationship.  I could have chosen to jump into it despite my uncertainties, but I chose to wait on the Lord and seek His direction.  After several months of prayer and turmoil about what to do, I ended up breaking up with him.  It was hard to do, but afterwards, I felt a peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).  I knew I needed to wait on God and seek His direction.  Whether His direction led me to a life of singleness or led me to a life with a man, He knew what was best, and I trusted Him.

Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalms 27:14

Be strong and take heart, God has plans way better than your own initial plans.



2.  CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE TOWARD POTENTIAL MATES
Here is something major I learned about potential mates when I was single.  Read and re read this sentence over and over until it is imprinted in your mind: I want for potential mates to have the girl/guy God wants for them, and if it isn't me, then GREAT; if it is me, then GREAT too! Here is what I used to pray about with potential guys.  "Lord, if this if the man you want for me, then make it clear for both of us, but if not, then I pray that you find a wonderful woman for him."  I firmly believed that even though I may have liked the guy, if he wasn't the one, then that was ok.  I was ok with it.  Most of the time, when we are rejected, we take it personally instead of realizing that "I" may not be what is best for that person and vice versa. 

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:4 Delight in God and the plans He has for you.  Desire His plans. It makes a huge difference.  Before I realized this, I would wallow in self pity when I was rejected and pout.  "I want him!  Why couldn't he have been mine?"  I would analyze the situation and wonder,  "What is wrong with me?"  The truth is that nothing was wrong with me; it was just that we were wrong for each other; and what a blessing to find that out instead of entering into a miserable relationship. I wanted whomever God wanted, that is if He wanted me to have anyone at all.  His plans were best, and I delighted in them.

3. TRUST IN THE LORD
Ok, folks...Here is an important question. Who do you trust more...yourself or God? Do you trust the person who is always messing up and creating problems for him/herself OR do you trust the person who is perfect, who created the world, who cares so much for your well being that he prepared a place of escape from the fiery depths of hell? During the time that my sister was single, she would cling to the following verse: Let go of your concerns. Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth. (Psalm 46:10) Let go of your concerns about finding someone and just trust in God. He really does have your best interests in mind!

4. USE THIS TIME TO SERVE GOD WHOLEHEARTEDLY
I am not saying that when you are married that you won't still serve God.  In fact, I believe that marriage should be one in which each spouse helps the other to grow closer in their relationship with God.  However, Paul did bring up a good point when he shared that when you are single your attention is not divided and you can focus completely on the Lord.  Here is what he said: 

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs--how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world--how he can please his wife-- and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world--how she can please her husband. (1 Corinthians 7:32-34)

I will be honest, since I have been married, I have found it hard to have my one on one quiet time with the Lord; my attention is divided, especially now that we have a sweet son.  Instead of having quiet times with the Lord in the mornings, I am up and about trying to get my husband's lunch ready for work, feed my son breakfast, change his diaper, and get his clothes on for the day.  After that I keep finding stuff to do, and before I know it, the day has ended and I find myself crawling into bed without having that one on one time.   Enjoy having this time to spend with the Lord, making Him your beloved and you His beloved.  As much as I love being married, I miss that.

I have a friend who is single, and she is a blessing to so many people.  She is constantly helping out with the youth at church, helping families when they need her to watch their kids, getting involved in activities such as rebuilding homes for people, bring meals to the sick, giving new Mamas time to sleep as she watches their newborn babies and children, giving people rides from place to place, being a second mom too her niece and nephew, taking pictures in her photography business, and bringing joy to people's lives.  She is constantly on the go.  If she had been married, she would not have been able to do all the things she does because her time and energy would be spent on her family. God has plans for her, and she is able to serve him wholeheartedly because she is single. What a blessing she is to others! Take this time to enjoy serving God with all your heart, because eventually, it will be hard to do so with a spouse.

5.  ALLOW GOD TO  USE THIS TIME MOLD AND SHAPE YOU
I am so glad that things happen in God's timing if we allow him to do so.  If Brian and I had met even a year or two sooner than we did, we would not have been ready for each other.  Brian at the time had a "wild side" to him that this girl would not have approved of, and I was so insecure and lacked confidence in myself, that Brian would have ignored me.  God used that time to instill a strong desire in Brian to grow in Him, and He used that time to help me to firmly establish my identity in Christ. God can use this time to mold and shape you into the person that will first, bring Him glory and second, prepare you for your future spouse (if that is indeed what he has planned for you.).

Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
    We are the clay, you are the potter;
    we are all the work of your hand. (Is 64:8)


Allow Christ who lives inside of your heart (that is if you have recieved Him into your heart) to mold and shape your mind to reflect His heart/mind.  He is the potter and you are the clay!



6.  CHERISH EACH MOMENT
I have found that life flies by.  I remember there being a time when I couldn't wait to grow up!  I was tired of being a child.  My mom would tell me, enjoy being a kid, because you will never get to be one again.  Life has flown by, and I am now 30.  I remember a time when I thought I would never get married, because it was taking forever, but then in a flash, I have been married  for several years and now have a sweet son.  My time as a single person was great, but I wish I had cherished it more.  I am learning to cherish each stage of my life.  I am now cherishing each moment with Brian and cherishing every stage of growth with our son.  Enjoy the time as a single person, there is a good chance that you may not ever get it back once you get married.

As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blowsover it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.(Psalms 103:15-16)

7. BE CONTENT 
This is the hardest thing.  We spend our lives thinking, "If I can graduate high school then I will be happy.  If I can graduate college, things will be better.  If I can get married, life will be amazing.  If I can have children, then I will be happy.  If I can retire, life will be bliss."  We are constantly looking towards the future to find contentment.  The secret to contentment is not to look to the future, but to Christ.  Paul discovered the secret to contentment: 

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:11-13

Look to Christ for strength not the future.  I was asked this one time and it has helped me so much then and now:  "Katrina, if you aren't content as a single person, what makes you think you will be content as a married person?" Here is another hard question, "What if you never get married?"  I am not saying you will never get married, God places those desires in our hearts for a reason, but the reality is that not everyone gets married.  Here is the point: I realized then and even now, that contentment doesn't come from situations (like marriage) but from Christ.  As a single person, there could have been a chance that I might not have ever gotten married.  Was I going to spend the rest of my life miserable because I wasn't married, or was I going to embrace my life with Christ and serve him wholeheartedly? Find contentment by relying on Christ's strength.

Hang in there, singles!  God knows the plans he has for you, and they are AWESOME (Jeremiah 29:11)! He loves you and knows the desires of your heart.  Rest in Him.

Cupid, God's Superhero?

Verse of the Week:

Cupid, God's Superhero?


If you could have any super powers, what would you pick?  I was once asked this random question, during a game when Brian and I were trying to get to know other couples.  I was hearing all sorts of answers: to be invisible, to be able to fly, to move around at the speed of light. When I got to share my answer, it sounded a little unorthodox, but that is just how my brain works; I come up with the weirdest things.  I wanted to be like Cupid and zap love into people's lives with my bow and arrow.  I would flutter around in my cute wings and whenever I saw any type of hate in people then ZING...POP!  My arrow would hit them and they would become all lovey, dovey, sweet, and cuddly with hearts popping out above them and little stars shining in their eyes.  Lets face it, I am a romantic at heart...I love hearing love stories about people and how they fall in love.  I love reading romance novels and seeing a couple come together against all odds because of their deep love, or a knight in shining armor coming to rescue his princess out of love.  My favorite movies are Pride and Prejudice, Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea, and Queen Victoria.  I sigh in contentment as I see the couple move in together for that sweet kiss or hear the man confess his undying love.  Yep...I am a hopeless...  I love LOVE! :)

Here is the problem....people in the world perceive love no more than as a deep affection towards someone, as a feeling, but love is so much more than just a feeling of attraction towards someone. Although it is nice to feel attracted to my incredibly cute husband, it would have never have been enough to keep our marriage together. Eventually he will have wrinkles around his face, bags under is eyes, white hair poking out of his head (that is if he doesn't go bald first!), a lump will form on his belly making me wonder if he is pregnant, and his rock solid muscles will be replaced with jello-like looking flab hanging off of his bones.  Poor guy...He sounds like a nightmare!  Nope, attraction is not a good foundation for marriage.  
Brian in 50 years.....AHHHH!!!!


You see, love is an incredibly complex word with way deeper meanings than a person realizes. One of my favorite romance authors, Micheal Phillips described love as this:


True love is deeper than mere emotions. True love never fades, it matures. All through the New Testament, love as Jesus describes it has to do with actions, attitudes, behavior, and commitment, not any particular feeling of giddiness.

 Lets turn back to cupid for a minute.  Suppose Cupid shot arrows that hit people and filled them with CHRIST'S LOVE.  What would that kind of love look like?

Describing Christ's love is incredibly hard to describe.  It is extremely complex....but the more I thought about it the more I saw one thing consistent whenever I looked into how Jesus loves.  Jesus's love is always selfless.  There is no room for self when loving with Christ's love.  Christ's love is ALWAYS in the best interest of others.  I Corinthians 10:24 says, Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.  Look at how Jesus loved and noticed that there is no selfishness involved.


  • He came into this world lower than angels and made himself a man to save us.
  • He healed the sick.
  • He loved the sinners no matter what they had done.
  • He created this beautiful world for us to enjoy.
  • He died on the cross for our sins.
  • He washed his disciples feet as an act of service.
  • He asked God to forgive the ones who killed him.
  • He made sure his mother was taken care of while dying on the cross.
  • He taught us about love and life.
  • He served others.
  • He prayed for me and everyone in the garden before he was crucified.
  • He promised to send his spirit to take care of me/others.
  • He heals hearts.
  • He promises to be with us always.
  • He turned the other cheek.
  • He never sought revenge.
  • He has prepared a place for me in heaven.
  • He wanted to bring His Father glory.
  • He has taught us how to live life abundantly.
  • He never rejects those who come to him.


WOW!!! His love is so selfless!  I made a list of things that I thought described Christ-like love, and here is what I came up with.

Think about how the world would be different if Cupid shot his Christ-like love arrows at everyone.  You would find the worst of enemies forgiving each other.  You wouldn't find any room for revenge in peoples hearts.  People would not be jealous of others but instead rejoice with them in their good fortunes.  People would be building each other up instead of putting each other down.  There would be no gossip and slander but people seeking to look for good in others.  People would be giving to the poor, open their homes to orphans and widows.  People would not get angry because they didn't get what they wanted.  People would not hold grudges.  People would be patient with others.  People would seek to find ways to be a blessing to others.  People would demonstrate unconditional love and love no matter how vile and horrible a person may be.  People would pray for others.  People would be truthful and have integrity.  People would be open to correction and be humble.  People would put the needs of others before their own.  What a different world it would be!

If everyone truly loved with Christ's love, there would be no more sin in the world! As it says in 1 Peter 4:8, Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Here is the amazing thing.  When we accept Christ into our hearts, His spirit comes to live inside of us.  So technically his love is inside of us too!  When we realize how loving Christ truly is, we can't help but love how He loves.  Jesus loves us fully and unconditionally.  Think of it this way...my husband showers me with love all the time that I can't help but want to love him in return.  It is the same way with our Savior.  He has done so much for us, that we can't help but want to love others with His love.  We begin to see others through His eyes and realize how much He loves even the worse of the worse, we want to love the same way.

Oh Lord, may our hearts cry be to love with the love you have inside of us!  May your voice be louder than the voice of our flesh/minds when it comes to responding to situations with your love.  May we view circumstances through your eyes of love.  In you name we pray,
Amen!

Ephesians 5:2 says, ...Live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Yep, Cupid would be God's superhero if He ever needed one, but Jesus is greater than cupid, and His name means, LOVE!

The Heart of God

Verse of the Week:

Jonah 4:2b  "I knew that you are a GRACIOUS AND COMPASSIONATE GOD, SLOW TO ANGER AND ABOUNDING IN LOVE, A GOD WHO RELENTS FROM SENDING CALAMITY."


The Heart of God


My heart breaks over the tragedies that have taken place the past few months with the Boston Marathon bombing, Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting, and even the Colorado movie theater shooting. People's bright futures were taken away from them through death, and other people's lives were changed dramatically due to the violence of four men.  Shame on these evil men for causing so much pain, fear, and heart-ache.  What were they thinking?  God will judge them for what they have done!  They do not deserve mercy! Right?.....

Every day I see something bad plastered on facebook about Obama, our politicians, liberals, homosexuals, abortionists, etc.  Those people deserve put downs because of all the things they do that are against the Bible. God has no place in their immoral lives! Right?.....

I talk to friends all the time about the hurt and  pain their family or back-stabbing friends have brought them. "I am never going to forgive them for how they treated me!" "If they don't treat me right, then I won't treat them right!"  "They have caused me too much pain, they don't deserve to be happy after they way they treated me!" Right?....


What does God think?  


Lets look at a common Bible story that most of us heard growing up...the story of Jonah.  God had ask Jonah to go to Nineveh  a Gentile city, to preach because the city was growing very wicked.  You have to understand, Jews during those days, NEVER associated with the Gentiles, it simply wasn't done!  The Gentiles were considered an unclean race, and Jews by law were required not to associate with them. So Jonah decided to flee by boat so that he wouldn't have to go to Nineveh and associate with unclean people. However, God, caring so much for the people in Nineveh, sent a great storm on the boat to bring Jonah back.  Jonah was dumped overboard, and a great big fish swallowed him and spit him back up on shore.  

After much resistance, Jonah finally went to Nineveh to preach.  While he was there, he began to proclaim that God was going to destroy Nineveh in 40 days.  The Ninevites heard the message and began to fast and call upon God while giving up their evil ways.  God, seeing that the Ninevites were turning from their evil ways and were asking Him for mercy, had compassion and did not destroy them. This angered Jonah.  Jonah 4: 2 says this, "He prayed to the Lord, 'O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee Tarshish.  I knew that you are a GRACIOUS AND COMPASSIONATE GOD, SLOW TO ANGER AND ABOUNDING IN LOVE, A GOD WHO RELENTS FROM SENDING CALAMITY." Jonah knew God's motive wasn't to destroy Nineveh but to give them mercy and love.  God doesn't want anyone to perish.  In 2 Peter 3:9 we hear of God's desire of wanting everyone to be saved, not condemned. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. God doesn't want anyone to perish or condemned. Jesus came not to condemn the world but to save it.  17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17

God has a heart for sinners.... 


Ninevah was a very wicked city.  In fact, God said that they "cannot tell their right hand from their left..." (Jonah 4:11) In other words, they didn't even understand their wickedness, yet God wanted them saved.  


Lets look at the human heart...


In Chapter 4, Jonah made a place for himself outside of the city of Nineveh to see if God would still destroy the city.  He is so happy when God grew a vine to provide shade and protect him from the scorching heat of the desert sun. However, later, God allowed a worm to destroy the vine, and this angered Jonah.  Lets see what God said in response to Jonah's attitude.  

10 But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

(Jonah 4:10-11)

Jonah cared more about a plant than the souls of 120,000 people. WOW!  He cared more about his own comfort than the destruction of 120,000 people.  


People can be very selfish.  We are quick to accept God's grace and forgiveness, but slow to forgive others.  We put down other sinners  and place judgment on them.  If anyone hurts us, we refuse to be merciful because they caused us pain.  We are kind and loving to those who are kind and loving to us, but hateful and mean to those who hurt others or ourselves.

Sometimes we want God to place judgement on people who hurt us or people we think are just plain bad, but God loves sinners and wants all of them to come to know Him.  

I feel so bad for the victims who lost their lives in the Boston Marathon bombing, the Sandy Hook shooting, and the Colorado shooting, but there are 4 other victims in those events that people never think about. One of these men has sadly passed away, but may the three other men learn of God's great love and forgiveness.



God has a heart for sinners, if He didn't, then we would never know of His grace and love. If we truly understand God's heart, we will want what He wants and that is for others to come to know of his love, grace, and forgiveness. If we truly understand God's love, we will stop judging others, and love them.  Every politician, homosexual, murderer, abortionist, and terrorist need our prayers and love, not our judgement.  Every person who had caused us pain and sorrow needs our forgiveness, not our punishment.  Lets be quick to love, and slow to judge.


God has a heart for sinners....

Love


Verse of the Week:

For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Galatians 5:14

Love


I remember one time seeing a pastor carry a backpack full of weights during his sermon.  While on stage he was talking about how without Christ, life can be a burden.  Cool concept; however, sometimes I think some Christians feel that LIVING FOR CHRIST can actually be a BURDEN!  I know I have felt that way before, but after understanding the message of grace and love, I begin to realize how Christ  truly does give us abundant life.

If we really truly UNDERSTAND God’s grace and love, serving God will not be a burden, but a JOY and a privilege to do.  You see, a lot of people believe that when Christians receive grace,  that many Christians, not truly understanding what God did for them, will continue to sin. After all, they are forgiven for all their sins, so why not keep sinning?  So in order to make sure that Christians actually do what God has in store for them, teachers go right back around and hammer the law and commands back into their lives as a measure of control to make sure they really do follow God.  They insist that sacrifices have to be made to follow God in the Christian life and is necessary to receive God's blessings and approval. As a result, Christians feel disappointed when they mess up and guilt is heaped upon them when they do not do everything perfectly. I myself felt the heavy burden of trying to do the right thing and never succeeding. Here is a secret... laws and commands do not keep us from sinning;  in fact the law increases sin;  “[…] the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies […]” (Romans 7:5)  We must understand that we are free from the written code of the law.  Colossians 2:13-14 explains it perfectly:

“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ.  He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code with its regulations that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.”

You see, the written code of the law is gone, Jesus is in.  God doesn’t want us to be drowning in a heap of guilt because we cannot be obedient to all of the commands of the old covenant.  Here is even better news,  we do not have to do anything to receive God's blessings, He has already blessed us!  

If people truly are saved, then Christ is alive in them.  What we need to relearn in society is that in Christ we are a new creation, Christ lives in us and will continue His good work through us.   I once asked my Dad a long time ago about his salvation experience.  What was the difference between before he was saved, and after he was saved.  He said, “Katrina, after I became a Christian, I didn’t want to sin anymore.”  You see, when we have Christ in us, we do not desire to sin, so why do we keep trying to force the law back on Christians in fear that they will go and start sinning because they can?  I am not saying that Christians won't mess up, but we need to spare ourselves of the guilt trip, and move on. We are saved by grace!

So let’s shift gears for a moment, and refer back to how if we truly understand God’s love then it is a JOY to serve Him and not a burden.  God’s love is AMAZING to me!  My heart bursts with joy when I think about the love God has shown me, and my deepest desire is to share it with others.  In the Bible it talks about how there is no greater love than to die for ones friends (John 15:13).  Jesus died not only for friends but for every single person who is held in bondage by sin and is destined to go to hell.  WOW!!!  That is true Agape love!  Agape love is the kind of love that is only focused on another person’s best interest.  Jesus only had our best interests in mind when he went through torture on the cross to save us. Here is what is even more awesome!  All we have to do is receive that free gift of love.  No strings attached!  Jesus paid it all!  

God’s love is unconditional.  In Romans 8:1 it says, “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,”  Once we have accepted Christ into our hearts, God is not there to condemn us for every single sin we have committed.  His love is unconditional; it does not matter what sin, you have committed,  from murder to adultery to stealing. Jesus washed it away and no longer condemns us for any sins we committed or will commit.   Sadly enough, people in our society both Christians and non-Christians display conditional love at times and turn their back on people if they mess up.  God, however, doesn’t turn his back on us,  He loves us more and His grace increases all the more!  “But where sin increases, Grace increases all the more.”  Thanks you Jesus for GRACE!

We can never be separated from God’s love.  Nothing in this life or the life to come can ever take us away from God’s love. “ 8 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)  Nothing folks and I mean NOTHING can keep us from God’s love.  Wow!!!

There is so much more to God’s love, but it would take thousands of pages to write about it all.  Keeping God’s love in mind, why would the things we do in Christ be a burden?  What a joy it is to serve a God who loves so deeply! How do we serve the one we love so much because of His outpouring love for us?  For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14)   I know what you are thinking,  "Wait a minute, Katrina, didn't you just say that we are free from the law and commands?"  You just gave us another law to follow, to love others."  Once again, you have to read the content before and after the verse.  

Before the verse,  Paul is talking about how the law has no value.  He says, "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision [circumcision was another law the Jews had to follow] has any value. The only thing that counts if faith expressing itself through love."  Therefore the law has no value, but FAITH that shows LOVE does.

Let's also read Galatians 5:13-16, 18:
 "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you keep on bitting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law."

You see, when by faith we accept Christ and receive forgiveness of our sins, Christ's spirit comes to live inside of us.  If we are led by Christ's spirit, we are not under the law.  Christ's spirit is full of love, therefore, we want to love; it is not an obligation or command.  However, in Galatians Paul is describing how amazing love is.  Love is such an amazing and complex action that it actually fulfills the law if we were actually under the law.



 “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” (1 John 4:16)  God’s love is in us ready to be on display for the world to see. I no longer feel burdened to give to others (a law given to us); no, I give freely out of the love in my heart.  I no longer sacrifice in helping those in need (another law); no, I joyfully help those in need because I love them.  I no longer force myself to forgive others (another command), I desire to forgive, because of the one who loved and forgave me. We do these things because of Christ’s love in us not because it is a burden or a command.  Love because he first loved us!

Going Crazy With the Law....



For years, I have gone to church every Sunday and learned so many different things, like: do not gossip, do not steal, do tithe 10 percent of your income to the church, do not get angry, do forgive others, do have patience,  do take care of the poor, do not have sex before marriage, do not commit adultery, do not lust, do not cuss, do not use God’s name in vain, do make peace with everyone, do love everyone, do not hate,  do serve others, do not lie, do not be jealous, do not divorce, do not be prideful, do not make idols, do not have other gods, do not murder, do not be bitter, do not, do this, do not, do this, do not……..the list goes on and on. 

 I look at the law and realize how NO ONE can follow all of the commandments God has given us. God gave the Jewish people over 600 commandments to follow in the Old Testament.  He knew it would be impossible for the Jews to follow them all, but that was the point of the law, to show us exactly how impossible it is to follow all of God's commands.  It is impossible!  Just look at the 10 Commandments alone in Exodus 20 and you will soon realize that if you have broken one, you have broken them all.  For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.( James 1:20)   No wonder people stop going to Church or trying to live for Jesus; they get so caught up trying to follow what is impossible to follow, and after continuous failure, they give up!  It says in Romans 3:23,  “ for ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  No wonder people get so frustrated because they know failure is unavoidable.  I found out from our Pastor at church that 70% of teenagers leave the church when they go to college.  We have so many rules and regulations heaped upon us that we begin to drown in a pool of commands that we can never keep.  Trapped is the best way to describe how people feel towards the law…

God knew we could never keep the law. Jesus himself demonstrated that to us in Matthew 19:16-26 when he talks to a rich man about how to get to heaven.  Here is the story:

Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
18 “Which ones?” he inquired.
Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”
20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

I would have looked at Jesus and asked the same thing.  Who can be saved?  It is impossible! If we don’t follow every command God give us, we are subject to eternal death! But in verse 26 Jesus says something very important.

26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Of course all things are possible with God.  He would never leave us to drown in our sins and be condemned to hell.  God made it possible to have abundant life without the law.  He did it through Jesus.  “But God demonstrated his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)  God knew we could never keep the law, so he put Jesus who knew no sin to die for our sins.   We are justified by faith in Christ Jesus, not by the law.  In Romans 3:28 it says, “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith APART from the deeds of the law.”

So here is the question I have to ask.  If we are justified by faith and not the law, why do we keep trying to follow the law? Why do churches keep hammering the law into our brains, and we experience failure over and over when we attempt to follow every command?  I know in my own life, I keep trying over and over to do the “do not’s and do’s” and keep failing.  What people forget is that the law was the first covenant between God and the Jews; the second covenant involves FAITH in Jesus!  The law is out, Jesus is in!  When we go back and try to keep the law of the Old Testament we commit spiritual adultery.  Now, before you claim I am being blasphemous and going against what God says, hear me out. Let’s read, Romans 7:1-6 carefully (don’t skim it!) and I will explain what I mean:

Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.

4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

For years, pastors and teachers have used Romans 7 to teach others about not committing adultery (another “do not”), but if you look at the verses before and after the scripture on adultery, you will see that Paul is using it as an example to make his point about the law and grace.  You see, when a woman’s husband dies, she is free from the law and is allowed to marry again.  When we accept Jesus, we died to the law and now have freedom through Christ. Just like when a woman’s husband dies, she now has freedom to marry; we die to the law and have freedom in Christ.  So why do we keep going back to the law?

I am not in any way saying that because we are free from the law that we should start sinning whenever we want.  Even Paul says, in Romans  6:15,  “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace?  By no means!” 

You see, when we accept Jesus into our hearts, we are a new creation.  Christ LIVES in us!  So when we re-read Romans 7:6, it begins to make sense:   6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.”  We are no longer bound to the written code of the law, we are to serve in a new way…by the Spirit…by Christ reigning inside of us.  Each day, we should be asking Christ how do you want to work through me today?  We need to be looking at Christ, who He is, what he does, how he loves, and allow who He is to be seen through us. 

I no longer criticize myself and call myself a failure whenever I mess up and do the wrong thing.  I am not bound by the law, God LOVES me too much to keep me bound to it.  “But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” (Romans 5:20)  Instead, I keep moving on and let Christ live in me.  I keep my eyes on Him.  I serve Him with all my heart because of the outpouring love he has given me.  I now want to shower others with His love.  Living your life for Jesus is freedom.  It is Grace!
